about

This is a tribute to Ntemi Piliso and his African Jazz Pioneers.

When Jannie Hanepoot was a member of the African Jazz Pioneers in the mid 1980s, they used to practice at Dorkay House in Eloff Street Extension, a historic venue where the music went on for decades during the Apartheid years. Jannie and Bra Ntemi Piliso were the only band members without 'day-jobs' so they were always early for rehearsals. Bra Ntemi was diabetic so would often suddenly need something to eat and would dispatch Jannie to the corner-cafe downstairs for Salt & Vinegar, where it seemed to be the main course with a peculiar condiment called 'fish & chips'. This one's for Bra Ntemi then, who was a great teacher and inspiration to all who worked with him!
