about

Zakes Nkosi was around Jo'burg in the 50s & 60s, and lived in Alexandra township. Some of South Africa’s most successful jazz musicians like Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Kippie Moeketsi played in his bands, The Jazz Maniacs and the City Jazz Nine. When the African Jazz Pioneers were first formed it was expressly with the purpose of reviving some of Bra Zakes' compositions. The Pioneers then went on to become a force on the local and international music scene under the leadership of Ntemi Piliso on alto sax. Nonto Sangoma is the first tune Zakes ever wrote, for his daughter.
