about

Dynamo is Douglas' dedication to a band called the Dynamics. He played in the second incarnation of this band in Cape Town in the mid 90s, but they originally were from Johannesburg in the early 80s. They were at the forefront of a wave of instrumental 'crossover' styles happening between South African indigenous 'Jive' music and some of the local fallout of the 'two-tone' movement (The Specials, Madness) happening in British pop music at the time, which was loosely based on Ska, the Jamaican fore-runner of Reggae. The original Dynamics were led by Winston Nyaunda on the alto sax, who later had a jive band ‘Winston's Jive Mixup’, of which Jannie 'Hanepoot' was a member. The Biggish Band also plays a traditional song called ‘Wedding Joy’ from the Winston's Jive Mixup repertoire.
